Tiara “Rules”

With Sofia, the girlfriend of Prince Carl-Philip, having attended the Wedding Banns of Princess Madeleine and her fiance Chris O’Neill today in Sweden, the questions of if she will attend the wedding next month and will she wear a tiara have popped up.

It is exceedingly likely that Sofia will attend the wedding next month. The question of will she wear a tiara or not is harder to answer.

The rules of wearing a tiara are simple, if the occasion calls for tiaras and you own one, wear it. You don’t have to be royal, you don’t have to have a title. If you own a tiara, you can wear it.

Charlene Wittstock, now Princess Charlene of Monaco, attended the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel in 2010, not long before her engagement to Prince Albert was announced. For this, she did not wear a tiara. Considering that the Monaco royals wear tiaras infrequently, it’s not a big surprise. Also, at the time the engagement between Albert and Charlene had not yet been announced. Perhaps if their engagement had been announced before the wedding, she might have worn a tiara. But I think probably not.

Letizia Ortiz, now Princess Letizia of Spain, attended the wedding of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary not more than a week before her own wedding to Prince Felipe. Although engaged, she did not wear a tiara to the wedding. She might not have wanted to wear a tiara or the Spanish royal family decided she shouldn’t wear a tiara before her own wedding. Again, it’s hard to say.

After her engagement to Crown Prince Frederik in 2003, Mary Donaldson attended events for the Romanian and Luxembourgish state visits to Denmark. Mary did not wear a tiara during these two visits, despite having three occasions to wear them. Again, this could be because she didn’t want to or the Queen did not want her to.

Then we have the special case of Maxima. Once Maxima became engaged to Prince Willem-Alexander, it was as if she was already a Princess. During the 2001 wedding of Crown Prince Haakon, Maxima wore a version of the Antique Pearl Tiara.

And then there is the very special case of Carina Axelsson. She is not engaged to Prince Gustaf (as far as anyone knows) but they have been together since around 2004. She attended the wedding of Prince Joachim and Princess Marie in 2008 wearing an unknown tiara. Since then, she has attended many tiara events wearing one of Benedikte’s tiaras and one that appears to be her very own. Carina is considered a member of the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleberg family and if Gustaf’s grandfather’s will was different, it’s entirely possible that they would have already been married by now.

We can speculate all we want, but it’s not easy to guess if Sofia will wear a tiara or not. We can really only wait and see. The Swedish Royal family has a history of keeping significant others to the side, but there is also a history of inviting them into the family. It’s possible that Sofia and Carl-Philip are already engaged and will announce the engagement after Madeleine’s wedding.

Thus far, it is all only speculation.

But sometimes, it can be fun to speculate…
